Betty at Benny’s or Mark at Mona’s

In search of a local sewer. You know, someone that makes clothes.

To make a simple slip dress or could that be mechanic shorts

It is all about the process. That is my latest mantra. PROCESS PROCESS PROCESS
I have this beautiful fabric from India. Cotton, made ethically, supporting and empowering women while challenging fast fashion.

I designed my own fabric and now I want to make some summer clothes.

Whats happened to all the local #patternmakers, #sewers & #makers?

So I met women running their own shop and working  at the Trading post in Bixby Knolls Long beach. A great space – group owned market place for whole natural foods and other goods and provisions

Their response –   the tailoring / sewing profession  is non existent in the USA – it is all made overseas. People don’t want to make  clothes it is a lost market.
So I went in search of a local sewer –

1st stop – North Long Beach. That is where I met Betty from Italy who ran Benny.s alterations – Nope – she only does aterations – great sign though.

She sent me to Mona’s –
Mark ran Mona’s.
They were tailors but could not get me in till October.

Mark sent me to Liz’s who simply said no.

So while I was getting a window repaired I was talking to an amazing  women selling doors and it turns out she  randomly made clothes for  free.

Yup she might see some young poor kid on the street and offer to make her a dress for free. HUMANITY – she gets up every morning around 5am to sew. She loves to start her day that way. Nope she knew no one who would make the dress. Perhaps she could ask here neighbor who makes quinceanera dresses!

So next was the local alteration shop, just  around the corner. The shop was manned by a petite, abrasive, yet delightful Asian woman who took her time to serve me. (well I didn’t get a chance to chat cause she was fixing a mans blue jacket)

But she did send me on another journey ?

“I don’t make dresses.  Not here ….  but  ….. try Little Saigon.

What an idiot I am  – they have many many dress makers – Vietnamese / Cambodians, Laotians ….. there is an industry – women and men  still sewing dresses.

So one Vietnamese strong coffee later and a walk around the plazas, a few pounds of lychees later I found a fabric cloth that makes dresses.

Side note:
We are selling soft 100% cotton azo free swaddling clothes at

That’s Ari with our organic, chemical free swaddling cloth

Building an idea – sustainably

The fabric is amazing, soft, 100%cotton, (khadi)  toxic free and they are supporting a sustainable living for women  – this is truly a great product.

Screen Shot 2018-04-12 at 7.09.59 AMI bought some beautiful yards of designer fabric to see if local designers and budding makers want to create their own clothes and interior designs.

IMG_1655This means you have to think differently about what it means to create quality products. It is not cheap,  or expensive and it will create jobs for women in rural India who can live in their own communities and in their own way /  culture. I want to be able to sell the fabric so you can create your own designs that are contempoiary, beautiful and fresh.

me101plus1My process is transparent and we need your support. I am taking you on a journey as I set up the business, explore all possibilities and opporunities.

These fabrics were created in Madrya Pradesh. Womenweave. The town is Maheshwar – one of the best places to find the most exquisite Saris.  A very rural area, smack in the middle of India. Imagine rich cultural heritage, few English speakers and a place where women have little control over their lives. Imagine what you can create, design your own fabric, make your own clothes, curtains, and more.

chalk + A BIT MORE

There is always something to draw on and someone who is wants to play.

Or there is a the added benefit of photobombing.

Desi Ramone

First and foremost, Desi Ramone is a performance artist. Yes, he writes and sings his original songs but a far cry from the normal humdrum singer/songwriter act.
Standing at 6ft 2 in classic western wear, Desi mixes up his
45 set like a toss salad. Covers and originals to the beats of Surf, Bo Diddly, Hooker Blues, Folk, Powerpop, Honky Tonk. It’s played all on his Gibson Acoustic through Fender Deluxe amp with one purpose … to get you dancing.

In March 2017 Desi released his single “Red And Yellow Roses” available to buy today on cdbaby

Sandy Seufert

Sandy Seufert began her musical life on the cello and has performed with the Culver City Symphony Orchestra the past 20 years. But in 2001, she started an inspired journey on the violin to explore her Swedish heritage and to give life to the beautiful and complex music from that region. Now Sandy performs at monthly local Scandinavian dances and at cultural events around Southern California. This past summer she went on her first visit to Sweden and had the chance to play alongside folk music icons in the midnight sun. Sandy is now composing new tunes in the Swedish tradition and regularly shares her joy for this music and traditions.
